Vocabulary 4



Abbreviate : to communicate something in short form.

                   eg: USA is an abbreviated form of the United States of America

Acronym is also used similar to Abbreviate ie..

                    eg:  USA is an acronym of the United States of America
                          UNO is an acronym of United Nations Organization 

Abbreviate come from the root word Brevity (noun), Brief (adjective)-[telling something in short, precise or concise manner without loosing its essense]

                    eg: Its a brief passage or a brief speech.
                         He is known for his brevity.

Synonyms-

Pithy- derived from the word pith, a botanical word. When a plant stem is cut, the central part is called pith
               
                     eg: His communication is Pithy [very direct, comes to the main (central) point]
 


 2) Compendium (noun) : complete in depth information but as precise as possible, especially in the form of a book

     Compendious (adjective)
               
                     eg: He is known for his compendious speeches.

                          I am working on a compendium of Indian presidents and their achievements.

3) Abstract- It consists of two different meanings.
  
         a) (as a noun) Summary or broad overview- eg: an abstract of the thesis
         b) (as an adjective) not clear, existing in thought or as an idea but not having a physical or concrete existence.  eg: an abstract art.

4) Curt, Terse - short and abrupt, little bit rude.
          
       eg: A = how to do this assignment ?
            B= sorry, I have work now, I will help you ASAP (polite way)
            B= I dont know (curt way)
           
                     eg: His reply was curt.

- Some persons who are brief in conversation or hardly speak, reserved can be called as a Laconic, taciturn, reticent

prolix - very long, tediously lengthy eg: My friend wrote a prolix letter to me.

garrulous - excessively talkative eg: a Garrulous cab driver.

chatterbox - one who talks a lot eg: syd is a chatterbox.

verbose, loquacious, voluble

 Tortuous - with full of twists and turns
       
          eg: I took a tortuous road
               A tortuous argument
         
          A - who is she??
          B - She's my wife (direct way)
          B - She's my son's mom (tortuous way)

Tangent - eg: tangential talk (keep on talking other than important point)
            
Circumlocution - talking round and round.


Abeyance - a state of temporary suspension, indecisive phase, unable to decide.

               eg: My promotion is kept in Abeyance

synonyms - Stalemate, Impasse, Deadlock, Checkmate
- All these words indicate that there is no further progress.

Impasse is often confused with PASSE

Passe- out of fashion eg: wearing those clothes is passe
                                     your attitude is passe

Fad - temporary fashion or short lived fashion.
                                 eg: fad diet (short term or temporary diet to reduce weight)

Vogue - prevailing fashion, popular.
                                eg: wearing this type of handbag is in vogue today.
                                     This period saw a vogue for Japanese painting.

Vocabulary 3

Let us know about some words starting with alphabet A

Abase - (observe the word base in abase!!! base is nothing but lower point of something.)

 Now in the different context we can say

------to make oneself low, to make oneself look cheap.
                  eg: Don't use bad language and abase yourself.

which means  not to lower one's dignity and behave in a cheap manner.

synonyms- Debase, Degrade, Demeaning

                   eg: He is very mean to me
                     
                      

Abash - (observe the word bash which mean  celebration
                eg: Birthday bash, marriage bash, New year bash etc...
                bashful- when some people excessively praise us then we feel embarrassed)

there comes abash which means feeling embarrassed

eg: He looked slightly abashed in the party


Abate - (observe the word bate in abate
              eg: I went to a movie and I waited for climax with bated breath)
                    I am waiting for my test results with bated breath)

bated breath - holding one's breath due to suspense, excitement and anxiousness

in general sense abate is reduce/decrease in intensiy.

              eg: I am waiting for my problems to get abated.
                    Its been raining for the past 4 hours, I am waiting for the rain to abate.

synonyms:

1) Dwindle-reduce/decrease

2) Wane - eg: The image of the politician is waning gradually
                      The patriotic feeling in younger generation is waning day by day

3) Diminish
4) Slacken

5) Subside- eg: I am waiting for the storm to subside (ie...to reduce)
                  
    Subsidy is the word from subside
                  eg: poor students are given subsidy of 10$ for books.

-----------------now lets see the opposite of decrease ie... to increase---------------

Burgeon: eg: the number of schols in our area is burgeoning ie....increasing

Balloon: eg: political parties are ballooning in number

Escalate, Mushroom


there are two other words which sounds similar to Abate, they are ABET, ABUT

ABET- to encourage a person to do something negative or bad

person who encourages to do negative is called ABETTOR


A did the crime

B is called the ABETTOR if he abetted him to do the crime

[another word which sounds similar to ABETTOR is ABATTOIR

ABATTOIR- slaughterhouse, where animals are killed]


synonyms of Abet- provoke and instigate= these words are negative in sense.

if anyone encourages in  a +ve sense then we use the words

Impetus and stimulus

eg: my friend provided me impetus/stimulus  to write GRE


now lets know about ABUT = adjacent/side by side


eg: My house is abutting walmart

synonyms:

CONcomitant - my house is concomitant to walmart

CONtiguos - adjacent, neighbour

here we can see a root word CON


CONfluence - convergence, merging

USA is a diverse country because it is a confluence of different cultures

CONclave - private meeting

it is a conclave of all the senators from different states of USA
